Decluttering

February 13, 2019 by Amy Wiens Leave a Comment

Decluttering

Decluttering… it’s been my mission for a few months now. I went into the holidays getting rid of things to make space for new toys, etc. I started the new year off with continuing the practice, cleaning out closets and dressers and attempting to get my home more organized and free of useless stuff.

There are psychological aspects of decluttering that make you feel freer and clear your mind. I am an organizational junkie, but I have been letting things slip due to how quickly time goes and how ‘on top’ of things I feel I need to be in order for the organization to remain. I have to be so intentional if I want to keep my home feeling clear and decluttered and to enjoy that clear feeling I crave.

I often find myself in a similar spot in my Christian walk, letting life and things around me influence me and what I do with my time. I make poor choices, letting outside influences distract me from my walk with God. The distractions are always there, vying for my attention. I need to declutter.

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God – 2 Corinthians 7:1 NIV

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. – Colossians 3:2 NIV

When I am acting intentionally and keeping my spiritual life decluttered by focusing on Jesus, that same clear and peaceful feeling I get as I declutter my home is true in my spirit as well. This is a practice, like with my home, that I find I must continually do, over and over again, searching for that feeling of peace and clarity. When I find it, it’s right there in the same place every time… with Jesus.
