Big and Small Things

Sometimes it feels like God is only interested in the big things. That we should only ask Him for things that are crucial, life and death. Things big enough to be worthy of His attention. I am blessed with family and friends and resources while there are people all over the world suffering far more than I am. Should I bother God with the loneliness I feel when my husband is away? The knee pain that’s been bothering me? That irritation at work? Blessings for myself and husband or our children?

Sometime I feel like I shouldn’t bother Him with the small stuff.

But this is not the God we see throughout His word. We see a God who is involved in all aspects of our lives. He made us in His image. He knows us deeply and specifically and He cares about the things that are important to us.

He knows our thoughts before we think them and our actions before we commit them.

Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.  – Luke 12:7

The Lord directs the steps of the Godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. – Psalm 37:23

It’s hard to fathom this type of love from the God of the universe. That He takes pleasure in the specifics of our lives. Not just the big things, but the details too. When we talk to God, we need to remember He wants to bless us. He wants to give us not just what we need, but what we desire. He wants us to depend on Him to be our Provider. He already knows what we are experiencing, but He wants us to trust Him with our hearts.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19

Last  week I was praying for my children and husband like I do everyday on my way to work. My daughter is a second year nursing student who is learning many new skills to use in hospital setting. Being a nurse myself, I know the challenge of getting the opportunity to practice a newly learned skill. You can go months after learning a skill before the chance arises to actually practice it even once.

That particular morning I decided I was  going to pray specifically that God would give her that opportunity. The chance to do something completely new. Something unexpected. To practice one of the specific skills that she was taught. Why not ask? He tells us to take any concerns to Him in prayer. No request is too trivial, not even a catheter insertion.

Only three hours later I received a text from my daughter who was overjoyed. She said she not only got to do one new skill, but three.

I smiled and my heart jumped. I knew without a doubt that God had answered my prayer. He knew my concern and the details of my asking. Not only did He answer that specific request, but he answered it beyond what was expected. .

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations. – Ephesians 3:20-21

Sometimes, we see God answer our prayers immediately and can’t wait to tell everyone of His goodness. Other times we need to be patient and wait on Him for the answer to come. Sometimes that answer isn’t what we want or expect. He is always at work, moving in our lives in ways we often can’t comprehend.

We were created to communicate with God. The more we spend time with Him, the more we get to know Him and His love. The deeper I go in my relationship with God, the more I have learned that He is a God who wants to bless His children. Scripture says that when a person is a child of God, He knows them.

My sheep hear my voice and I know them. And they follow me. – John 10:27

When I witness small prayers like these answered in my life and others, I am reminded of Gods great love for us. I’m Reminded that we are all precious to Him. Nothing is too minuscule or to big to ask  of Him. He is a God who is able.

In John 15:7, God tells us:

If  you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. – John 15:7

God is not a genie who grants us whatever wishes our hearts desire. We often get ourselves out of sync and we don’t ‘remain in Him‘, but He will guide our hearts and align our desires with His own. God wants us to come to Him, like a child to His Father, bringing all our concerns to Him, both big and small, and trust that He will answer as He sees best for each one of us.
