The True Joy of Worship

Worshiping is supposed to be a joy isn’t it? Is it my obligation to serve even when I don’t feel like it or when I want a break?

I asked myself these questions, one Sunday a few months ago. After playing on the worship team most Sundays for a year, I was feeling drained and in need of a break. However this thought kept nagging me. ‘God has called me to be a part of the worship team at church. I can’t take a break, because that is the equivalent of giving up on God’s calling.’ so I kept playing, pushing myself even though I was running on empty. Slowly it became less about worshiping God and more about getting through the morning set of songs. 

It took hurting my wrist and being unable to play to realize that we aren’t meant to endlessly go on and on. Our own strength will fail us. Even God rested when he made the earth (Genesis 2:2). I took some time away from playing on the worship team and God showed me that my relationship with him had been put second to ‘worship’. I was trying to fill myself up with what I was doing instead of allowing myself to be filled up with him.

God is re-teaching me what true and proper worship is. True worship begins with giving God what he is worthy of, all glory, honor and praise. 

The answers to my questions came, I just had to slow down and search for them. There will be times that He asks us to do more than we think we are capable of, but serving is supposed to be a joy. I had lost sight of the one who gave me that joy. He gives us rest and restores our soul but we must take steps towards Him. He says to come, not sit and wait. 

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me , for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden light. – Matthew 11:28-30

I have been called for a purpose and he will lead me through. Whether it is straight or detours are made, the Lord is faithful through it all. 

Because of the lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. – Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV

and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 NIV

for God’s gift and his call are irrevocable…for from him and through him and for him are all things to him be the glory forever! Amen.- Romans 11:29,36 NIV
